Candida

What is Candida?

Candida is a type of yeast (fungus) that naturally lives in small amounts in various parts of your body, such as the mouth, skin, gut, and genital area. While it usually doesn’t cause harm, an overgrowth of Candida can lead to infections. The most common form of Candida infection is Candidiasis, which can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, nails, mouth (thrush), and genital area.

Symptoms of Candida Infections

Candida infections can manifest in different ways depending on the location of the infection. Here are some of the most common symptoms:

  • Skin: Red, itchy rash, especially in warm, moist areas like underarms, groin, or between fingers and toes.
  • Mouth (Thrush): White patches on the tongue, inside the cheeks, and roof of the mouth, along with pain or difficulty swallowing.
  • Genital Area: Itching, redness, swelling, and thick white discharge (in women). Men may experience redness and discomfort around the penis.
  • Nails: Discoloration, thickening, or crumbling of nails.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms or suspect a Candida infection, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist to receive proper treatment.

Causes of Candida Infections

Candida is a naturally occurring fungus in the body, but various factors can lead to overgrowth. Some common causes include:

  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, allowing Candida to overgrow.
  • Weakened Immune System: People with compromised immune systems, such as those with diabetes, HIV, or undergoing chemotherapy, are more susceptible to Candida infections.
  • Poor Hygiene: Poor hygiene can allow yeast to thrive, especially in areas like skin folds or private areas.
  • Warm, Moist Environments: Candida thrives in warm, moist environments, which is why it often affects areas such as the groin or armpits.
  • Diet: A diet high in sugar and refined carbs may promote Candida overgrowth.

Treatment for Candida Infections

At Aspen Dermatology, we offer personalized treatments to address Candida infections. Depending on the severity and location of your infection, we may recommend:

  • Topical Antifungal Creams or Ointments: These are often used for skin infections.
  • Oral Antifungal Medications: For more serious or widespread infections, we may prescribe oral antifungal medications.
  • Lifestyle and Dietary Adjustments: Maintaining good hygiene, wearing breathable clothing, and adjusting your diet can help prevent Candida overgrowth.
  • Monitoring and Follow-up: In some cases, we may recommend regular follow-ups to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to monitor for potential recurrence.

Prevention of Candida Infections

While Candida is a naturally occurring yeast in the body, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing an infection:

  • Maintain good hygiene: Wash and dry skin folds and genital areas thoroughly and regularly.
  • Wear breathable clothing: Loose-fitting, moisture-wicking fabrics can prevent Candida from growing in warm, moist environments.
  • Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: Antibiotics can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in your body, so only take them when prescribed by a doctor.
  • Manage blood sugar levels: If you have diabetes, keeping your blood sugar in check is important to prevent Candida overgrowth.
  • Limit sugar intake: Candida thrives on sugar, so reducing your sugar and refined carb intake may help prevent overgrowth.
