Lice

What Are Lice?

Lice are tiny, parasitic insects that infest the scalp, hair, and sometimes other areas of the body. They are commonly found in children but can affect anyone, regardless of age. Lice are not a sign of poor hygiene, but they do spread quickly in environments like schools, daycare centers, and homes where close contact occurs.

Types of Lice

There are three main types of lice that can affect humans:

  1. Head Lice: These lice are found on the scalp, particularly behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. They are most commonly seen in children but can affect adults as well.
  2. Body Lice: These lice live in clothing and only come to the skin to feed. They are usually associated with poor hygiene or living conditions.
  3. Pubic Lice: Also known as "crabs," pubic lice infest the pubic area, but they can sometimes be found in other coarse body hair, such as armpits or chest hair.

Symptoms of Lice Infestation

The primary signs of a lice infestation include:

  • Itching: This is the most common symptom, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the lice.
  • Visible Lice or Nits: Adult lice and their eggs (nits) can be seen in the hair, usually near the scalp. Nits are tiny, oval-shaped, and often yellow or white.
  • Red Bumps or Sores: Scratching due to itching can lead to irritated or infected areas of the skin.

How Do Lice Spread?

Lice are primarily spread through direct head-to-head contact, which is why they are most common among school-aged children. They can also spread via shared personal items, such as:

  • Hats
  • Combs
  • Headphones
  • Bedding or towels

It's important to note that lice do not spread through pets, as they are human-specific parasites.

Diagnosis and Treatment at Aspen Dermatology

If you suspect you or your child has lice, it’s crucial to get a proper diagnosis. At Aspen Dermatology, we specialize in diagnosing and treating lice infestations. Our team uses specialized tools and methods to confirm the presence of lice and provide the most effective treatment.

Treatment Options

Lice treatment typically involves:

  1. Prescription and Over-the-Counter Treatments: We may recommend medicated shampoos, creams, or lotions that kill lice and nits. Prescription-strength treatments may be necessary for stubborn infestations.
  2. Manual Removal: After using medication, manual removal of lice and nits with a fine-toothed comb may be required. Our dermatologists can help guide you through this process to ensure it is done effectively.
  3. Cleaning and Disinfection: We advise washing clothing, bedding, and personal items in hot water to prevent reinfestation.
  4. Follow-Up Care: Lice eggs may still be present after treatment, so a follow-up visit is important to ensure all lice have been eradicated.

Preventing Lice Infestations

While lice can be challenging to prevent entirely, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of infestation:

  • Avoid Head-to-Head Contact: Remind children not to share hats, hairbrushes, or other personal items.
  • Regular Checks: Frequently check your child’s scalp for lice, especially during outbreaks at school or daycare.
  • Educate Family and Friends: If lice are discovered in your home, it’s important to inform close contacts, so they can take preventative measures.
