Lipomas

What is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a slow-growing, benign (non-cancerous) tumor made up of fatty tissue. These soft, movable lumps typically form just under the skin and are the most common type of soft tissue tumor in adults. Although they can develop anywhere on the body, lipomas are most commonly found on the shoulders, arms, and thighs.

At Aspen Dermatology, we understand that while lipomas are generally harmless, they can cause discomfort or concern. Our team is dedicated to providing expert diagnosis and personalized care for all skin-related conditions, including lipomas.

Symptoms of Lipomas

Most lipomas are:

  • Painless: In many cases, lipomas do not cause any discomfort. However, larger lipomas or those pressing on nerves can cause pain or tenderness.
  • Soft and movable: Lipomas typically feel soft to the touch and can be moved slightly under the skin.
  • Small to large: Lipomas vary in size. While many are small (less than 2 inches), some can grow much larger.

If you notice a lump under your skin that seems to be growing, it’s important to schedule a consultation with our specialists at Aspen Dermatology.

Causes and Risk Factors

While the exact cause of lipomas is unknown, several factors may increase the likelihood of developing them:

  • Genetics: Lipomas often run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition.
  • Age: Most lipomas develop in people between the ages of 40 and 60, though they can occur at any age.
  • Other conditions: Certain conditions, such as familial multiple lipomatosis, can cause multiple lipomas to develop.

Diagnosing Lipomas

Diagnosis of a lipoma typically begins with a physical exam. Our dermatologists will assess the lump based on its size, shape, and texture. In some cases, additional tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions. These tests may include:

  • Ultrasound: To examine the tissue structure.
  • Biopsy: In rare cases, a sample of the tissue may be taken to rule out other growths.

At Aspen Dermatology, we use the latest diagnostic tools to ensure accurate and efficient results.

Treatment for Lipomas

In many cases, lipomas do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort, grow rapidly, or affect mobility. However, if you are concerned about your lipoma, there are several treatment options available:

  • Surgical removal: This is the most common treatment for lipomas. The procedure is relatively simple, and the lipoma is typically removed under local anesthesia.
  • Liposuction: In certain cases, liposuction can be used to remove the fatty tissue of the lipoma.
  • Steroid injections: In some cases, injections can help shrink the lipoma, but this may not completely remove it.

Our experienced dermatologists will work with you to determine the best treatment plan based on your unique needs and preferences.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice a lump under your skin that feels soft, moves easily, and grows over time, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist. While lipomas are generally non-cancerous, it’s always best to get a professional opinion to rule out other potential issues.
