Moles And Birthmarks

What Are Moles and Birthmarks?

Moles are small, dark brown spots or growths on the skin, made up of clusters of pigment cells. Most moles are harmless, but some may change over time, which is why regular skin checks are important.

Birthmarks are colored marks or spots on the skin that are present at birth or appear shortly after. They can vary in size, color, and texture and are generally benign, although certain types may require medical attention.

Types of Moles

  1. Common Moles (Melanocytic Nevi)
These are small, round or oval growths that are usually brown or black. They can be flat or raised and typically appear during childhood or early adulthood.
  2. Atypical Moles (Dysplastic Nevi)
These moles are often larger than common moles and can have irregular borders and multiple colors. Atypical moles may increase the risk of developing melanoma, a form of skin cancer, and should be monitored regularly.
  3. Congenital Moles
Present at birth, congenital moles vary in size and can sometimes become larger as you grow. Although rare, these moles may carry a slightly higher risk of developing skin cancer over time.

Types of Birthmarks

  1. Pigmented Birthmarks
These include moles and other spots like café-au-lait spots. They result from an overproduction of pigment-producing cells.
  2. Vascular Birthmarks
Vascular birthmarks appear as red or purple spots caused by blood vessels that develop abnormally under the skin. Examples include hemangiomas and port-wine stains.

When to Be Concerned

While most moles and birthmarks are harmless, it's important to keep an eye on any changes. If you notice any of the following signs, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our expert dermatologists:

  • Changes in Size or Shape: If a mole or birthmark grows, becomes asymmetrical, or its borders become irregular, it should be examined.
  • Color Changes: Multiple colors or uneven coloring within a mole or birthmark could indicate a need for evaluation.
  • Bleeding or Itching: Any changes in texture, such as itching, bleeding, or crusting, should be addressed promptly.
  • New Moles in Adulthood: Moles that appear after the age of 30, particularly those that change rapidly, should be assessed.
