Shingles

What is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox). After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later in life as shingles. It typically presents as a painful, blistering rash that appears on one side of the body, usually on the chest, back, or face.

Symptoms of Shingles

Shingles can cause a range of symptoms, which often include:

  • Pain, burning, or tingling on one side of the body.
  • A red rash that appears 1-5 days after the pain starts
  • Fluid-filled blisters that crust over within 7-10 days.
  • Itching and sensitivity in the affected area
  • Fatigue and fever in some cases

Shingles typically lasts for 2-4 weeks, but the pain can persist even after the rash has healed, a condition known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN can cause severe discomfort and should be addressed with medical care.

Who is at Risk for Shingles?

Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles, but certain factors increase the risk of reactivation:

  • Age: People over 50 are more likely to develop shingles.
  • Weakened Immune System: Conditions like HIV/AIDS, cancer treatments, or immunosuppressive medications can make you more vulnerable.
  • Stress: High levels of stress may increase the likelihood of shingles flare-ups.
  • Previous Chickenpox Infection: Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past can develop shingles later in life.

Shingles Treatment at Aspen Dermatology

At Aspen Dermatology, we provide comprehensive care for individuals with shingles, including diagnosis, treatment, and management to reduce the severity of symptoms and risk of complications. Treatment options may include:

  • Antiviral Medications: Early antiviral therapy can help reduce the severity of symptoms and the duration of the shingles outbreak.
  • Pain Management: We offer various options to alleviate pain, including over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, and topical treatments.
  • Steroid Creams: For localized inflammation and itching, we may recommend steroid creams or ointments.
  • Postherpetic Neuralgia Care: For patients who experience ongoing pain after the rash resolves, we provide specialized treatments to manage and reduce chronic pain, including nerve block therapies or prescription medications.

Shingles Vaccine

Shingles can be prevented with the shingles vaccine, which is recommended for adults over the age of 50. The vaccine reduces the risk of developing shingles and, if the infection does occur, it can decrease the severity and duration of symptoms. Aspen Dermatology offers shingles vaccination and can help determine if it is right for you.
